Canada - Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Canada launched the Federal Skilled Trades Program in 2013 with an aim to provide a permanent residence pathway to skilled trades workers.The FST Program is one of the three federal immigration program under the Express Entry System. 

Federal Skilled Trades Program offers the opportunity to the aspiring  immigrants to become the Permanent Resident of Canada who have  a minimum 2-year experience in a skilled trade which is listed under the NOC (National Occupation Classification). As with all Express Entry programs, FST uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank interested candidates.

Eligible Criteria for Federal Skilled Trades Program

Education

Under the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) education is not mandatory. If a candidate is willing to acquire additional points under the Express Entry system, then the candidate must have been graduated in foreign education and owns an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an International, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) approved organization. The candidates must also have Canadian Secondary Certificate, Diploma or Degree.

Work Experience

Have at least 2 years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the 5 years before you apply.

Language Proficiency

The candidate must be eligible in any one of the below-mentioned criteria to get qualified in language proficiency.

  • The candidates should take a language test either of the English language or the French language or of both the official languages of Canada. The test must be authorized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  • The candidates should meet the language test aptitudes of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening. The applicant should also meet the benchmark of CLB 4 for reading and writing.

Arranged Employement

Have a 

  • valid job offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least 1 year or
  • certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority

Skilled work experience eligible for the FSTP falls under the following categories of the National Occupational Classification (NOC):

The candidates who are specialists and have an experience in skilled trades are considered under this classification in the Federal Skilled Trade Worker Program. Following are those classes of major and minor skilled trade experienced candidates who are contemplated under this classification:

  • Major Group 72: industrial, electrical and construction trades,
  • Major Group 73: maintenance and equipment operation trades,
  • Major Group 82: supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production,
  • Major Group 92: processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators,
  • Minor Group 632: chefs and cooks, and
  • Minor Group 633: butchers and bakers.
