WHAT IS THE PARENT'S AND GRANDPARENT'S PROGRAM?

The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) is a unique immigration program that enables both Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their own parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residence. It is the best option for people who want to spend a lot of time in Canada with their family members!

Parents and Grandparents Program: Process

1) This program is operated through a lottery system by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

2) Before being placed in a pool, the citizens and permanent residents must submit an Interest to Sponsor form.

3) IRCC then makes random draws from the pool and issues Invitations to Apply (ITA’s).

4) The sponsors and their parents and grandparents have further 60 days to submit a full application.

What is THE Eligibility Criteria ?

There are several factors considered which include:

1) Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.

2) Have received an Invitation to Apply

3) Must be at least 18 years of age

4) Must be living in Canada

5) Must have sufficient income to meet the needs of your parents or grandparents to be sponsored

6) Meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Regulations

The Sponsors must also:

1) Agree to financially support the parent or grandparent for 20 years from the date of approval for Permanent Residence.

2) Ask the government to repay any social assistance given to a parent or grandparent during that period.

LETTER OF INVITATION FOR PGP

A letter of invitation is an essential component Parents and Grandparents Program application. This letter needs to be written by the host who is either invitee’s grandchild or child living in Canada.

It includes a written commitment, that you will be financially responsible for the parent or grandparent you invite for as long as they stay in Canada. 

HOW TO APPLY FOR PGP?

All applicants are submitted online through the IRRC’s permanent residence application portal. Along with this, there is a limit to the number of applications accepted under PGP.

What are the processing fee and time for a parent and grandparent program?

The processing time required for this program according to IRCC is between 20- 24 months. It can also vary based on the country you apply from. The processing fees are $1050 per adult to be sponsored and $150 for any dependent child included in the application.

What if you don’t receive an invite to sponsor your parents and grandparents?

If you didn’t get invited to apply for the last round of invitations, or if you missed out on applying altogether- don’t worry! You can still invite your parents and grandparents to come to live with you in Canada for upto 2 years under the Super Visa Program.
